Did You Know?
As recent as 200 years ago, chamber pots
were used to dispose of human waste.
Chamber pots were pots stored under beds
that allowed a person to use the
restroom in the house rather than having
to go outside during the night.
Chamber pots were often emptied by
simply throwing the waste out of the
window, coining the phrase "look out
below!"
In Europe, public fountains were the
main source of drinking water for the
inhabitants of the city. They were
also the main source for bathing,
washing clothes, washing dishes, and
people would even use the restroom in
them. Needless to say, these
fountains were breeding pots for many
diseases and plagues.
Water borne illnesses and pandemics
include cholera, diarrhea, hepatitis A
and E, malaria, ringworm, salmonella,
typhoid fever, west-Nile virus, and
yellow fever (CDC).
Modern plumbing is the number one
defense against disease, plague, and
influenza. It wasn't modern
medicine that quelled the major
pandemics of old that killed millions at
a time, rather it is modern plumbing
that keeps these diseases at bay!
Modern waste disposal systems, water
treatment plants, water filtration
systems, and technologies that prevent
the cross contamination of potable water
systems and sewage treatment systems
ensure the health of the individual as
well as the health of the nation.
